8 ways to Improve your Relationship
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 4:52 PM

It is possible to have a very fulfilling and intimate relationship with your partner. It is not easy, though, because there are always going to be problems along the way. Don’t ever listen to anyone who says relationships are easy.
If you have a good plan and you are willing to work hard, you can have a very loving relationship for years and years. The more loving your relationship is, the happier you both will be and the more you will enjoy being together.
The following are suggestions to help you have a loving relationship:
1. Be grateful. If you are with a person you love, be grateful for having that person in your life. The thing you need to do is internalize that gratitude. Your partner won’t know how grateful you are if you don’t tell him or her.
  • It is easy to let your partner know you are grateful. Talk to your partner, give small gifts, or just make a point to spend time with him or her. Also, just say “thank you”.
2. Make your relationship fun. You both probably do not always agree on what activities are fun, but find things you both like to do. It can be simple things that do not cost a lot of money. The key is to enjoy something together.
  • Trying something new together is a great idea because you will both feel excited and have a great time together.
3. Go above and beyond. It is not always easy to go above and beyond to do something nice for your partner, but it is a great way to tell your partner that you appreciate him or her. Do something big to make your partner happy for no reason at all and he or she will be amazed.
  • It could be something like hosting a party in your partner’s honor, or taking care of a chore he or she hates doing.
4. Plan something your partner will enjoy. It is a good idea to do an activity your partner enjoys even if you don’t like it. It shows you love and care about your partner. You will have things you both love to do but doing something you don’t care for makes a big statement.
  • Maybe your partner would love to take dancing classes but you have always said no. Give it a try.
5. Think about what your partner needs. We often get in a rut and stick to our comfortable habits instead of focusing on the things our partner needs.
  • Be affectionate if that is what your partner likes.
  • Let your partner share his or her feelings with you.
6. Tell your partner you love him or her. “I love you” is something that people never get tired of hearing. You can say it aloud, send it as a text message, email it, or show it through actions. Somehow, though, you need to tell your partner often that you love him or her. This improves the way you communicate, helps everyone be happier, and makes your relationship better.
7. Be a good listener. You want to tell your partner how you feel, but you have to learn to really listen to what your partner is feeling as well. Actively listening helps you gain a better understanding of your partner. Your partner will appreciate your listening. Your partner will realize that he or she matters to you and that you care about what he or she has to say.
8. Be supportive of your partner’s ideas. If you both are in agreement about something, show and tell your partner that you support him or her. Feeling supported will help your partner feel how much you love him or her.
  • Even if you and your partner disagree, you should do so in a loving way. Don’t be too critical about your partner’s ideas. Instead, listen to what he or she has to say and offer some other suggestions that you think are better.
If you remember the suggestions above and implement them in your life, you will have a better and more loving relationship with your partner.
